Narrative Music Video= Illustration, Amplification and Disjuncture.

Illustration= Lady GaGa Poker Face

Poker Face is a good example of illustration due to the fact that the lyrics depicts the events happening on-screen. A good example of this is when she says the chorus “Gimme ma poker face” it transitions to a scene at a poker table with two men. The lyrics also follow the music video in a fairly relevant fashion, however this stereotype is subverted due to the beginning with the dogs bears no relevance to the lyrics of the song.

Amplification= Akon’s Smack That

This is a good example of amplification due to the fact that the song’s lyrics kind of match what its saying but at the same time some of it is irrelevant. An example of this is “Up front style ready to attack now” could indicate things going wrong in nightclubs where the video is set or just getting prepared to flirt with girls, the exact one is unclear so therefore is a good example of amplification.  Also the main lyrics seem to relate more to surreal drug taking instead of being in a nightclub.

Disjuncture= Disturbed Down With the Sickness

This is a great example of disjuncture due to it lyrics bear no relevance whatsoever to the music video, which was recorded live at a concert. Apart from the crowd doing movement and hand gestures towards Disturbed. The lyrics relate more to mental illness such as “It seems that all has dies and faded” so this is overall a good example of how a song’s lyrics cannot relate one bit to the music video.
