Google Maps Images of Locations Wanted For Media Music Video YR13

1. Tallington Bridge

For our extensive time lapse shot, we want to capture several trains going by that is interrupted by traffic once the barriers go up. We ideally need to capture at least 6-10 trains to make the 10 second sequence, even though it will be sped up very fast, to seem long enough to make the viewer feel that it was filmed over a few hours. Time lapses are appropriate for the alternative genre to emphasize upon the vast scale of the genres indie ideology of not necessarily needing to have large budgets so that is why a lot of alternative music videos are filmed near rural or semi-urban train track locations for their time-lapse shots.

2.  Carlby Fen Train Tracks

We will use some shots of Calby Fens train tracks near an open field to incorporate into our time lapse sequence. Alternative music videos often use two or three sparely located train tracks that are incorporated into just one 20-30 second time lapse sequence. The same principal for this is the same as what was mentioned above for time-lapse sequences.

3.  Toft Bridge

We will use toft bridge for our lip-syncing scenes due to the fact that the area is overgrown and has a menacing looking fence under the bridge that adheres to the conventions of urban decay locations that are frequently utilised in alternative music video locations. In addition, we will also film the lip-syncing scenes against the background of this area to make our animal masks stand out more and to make it seem more surreal like most alternative music videos are.

4. Hackonby Bus Stop

We will use Haconby's bus stop in order to film parts of the narrative shots. The scene will be of me and later Conor using this because part of the narrative consists of the three mask-wielding men finding each other after a journey through our chosen locations. This adheres to alternative themes of characters using bus-stops and having a journey to find themselves or somebody important to them, such as in Galantis "Runaway" music video.

Cutting To The Beat These are shots of cutting to the beat of the lyrics. We have coloured coded it so that we understand when everything cuts and then when we go out filming it is easy to follow.

Group Artist/ Track Chosen

Joint Honours

Joint Honours is the band that we did chose to do our music video on. The track we are using from Joint Honours is a song called 'Windows'.

Joint Honours are a band which seem very organised and experienced this is one of the reasons as to why we picked this band to do our media production on. We could also adapt

"Joint Honours are a pop/rap band that came together in Derby and bring fantastic melodic rap fused with choral harmonies.

They have recently received national airplay after featuring on the BBC Radio Six playlist. Their track ‘’Coming Together’’ was also included on Tom Robinson’s Freshnet New Music Mixtape in May 2014. They have performed at London’s O2 Arena, Y-Not Festival, Bearded Theory and featured at Derby’s Olympic Torch Parade"

This is a picture of their website

They have 4 members which make up the band:

David Jackson- Vocals/ Keys
Simon Marles- Guitar / Vocals
Adam Stone- Bass
Max Chambers- Drums

The reason why we chosen this song was because we believe as a group it'll be easy to make a music video and will turn out to be a good music video because the conventions of the song will be easy to replicate into a video as well as experiment with our own ideas to create an innovative music video that at the same time follows the typical conventions of the alternative music genre.

This is the song called 'Windows' in which we are going to chosen for our music video.
Job Roles

Peter- Jewett Thomas
  • Story-Board Designer
  • Co-Director
  • Cinematographer
  • Lighting Director
  • Co~Marketing Director
  • Editor

 Why

I have been allocated the role of storyboard designer because I am able to draw sufficiently accurate drawings for the planning process. I am creative so this is the task I can take on. I am also one of two Co-directors as I am organised and took a share of directing responsibility for our last production. Similarly I am one of two cinematographer as I have experience in this from last years production. As a result of being creative I will have good ideas for shot composition and framing. This links in with being the lighting director as if I am operating the camera it follows that I should look into the lighting states as I can see what shows up well and suits the tone of the song. Each of us are taking on the role of Co-marketing director.

Marcus Riley
  • Shot List Designer
  • Co-Director
  • Co- Mise-en-Scene Director
  • Set Designer
  • Co-Marketing Director

Why

I have chosen to take on the role of shot list designer because this one of the roles I did in last years production, so have a good understanding on how it should be done. This is also one of the many reasons I one of the Co-directors, as this was my main job on the day of filming in our last production. I am the Mise-en-scene director and set designer because I own the location we are filming in and I did the budget list, therefore I know exactly what needs doing for the set, costume and props. We have agreed that all three of us will be one of the Co-marketing Directors because we feel that marketing is something we can do well as a group.

Conor Durrant

  • Co- marketing
  • Co- Lighting director
  • Mise- en- scene director
  • Set designer
  • Editor
I have chosen to be the editor because I believe last year I played a big part in editing along side Pete so me and him will take up the editing side just like last year because we work well in a team and are effective together. The marketing side of the project will very important therefore we have decided to all work together with marketing because non of us in the group are better than the rest so with the marketing we will share it.

Harry Sandall

  • Prop Director
  • Co- Marketing
  • Co- set designer
  • Co- Cinematographer
  • Actor
I have chosen to be the prop director just because last year I was good at understand what props need to be on set and which props meet the conventions of our target audience, and it would be sensible if I took on the role of doing props again. Also I am the co- cinematographer because when Pete is needed else where I am the second best in the group at working a camera therefore it was also a sensible idea to put me Co- cinematographer. My main role in this group is being the actor this is a role that I did last year and part of the reason why our production last year was so successful.
Storyboard

Storyboard

Below is the storyboard for our music video that we will use as a guideline or benchmark for our filming ambitions.
We shall follow up on these blueprints and stay true to them as much as possible to show consistency with our filming and to show that we have carefully planned out our music video with care to make it look as alternative as possible.

Whilst we shall still do this, we will also improvise and add additional shots on the filming days due to the fact that once we are on location we shall utilise our media expertise in order to incorporate additional shots that we feel will help us gain additional marks in our production. Overall we shall not let this factor impede our already good storyboard but we shall show field improvisation in order to overall improve our production.

If we do decide to scrap or modify one scene we can then compare it the original draft and then justify why we chose not to do it to emphasize upon our adaptability.

Our overall priority is to make sure that the concepts of our ideas and locations go together to suit the alternative genre and not subvert the conventions of it. This shows how dedication to make the best media product that we can possibly do.

Initial Budget List for Joint Honours

A budget list shows the main props and costumes that we want to purchase to use in our production. The list shows the name, price and location of the item that we need. It is extremely important that we create a budget list so that we can keep track of the total cost of our production. It will also help us to control our money more carefully as we will know what we need. Plus it will inform the group of how much money each person needs to contribute to the production.

Theories Within Genre

There are several theories regarding genre which subsequently affect peoples interpretations of music videos/promo's. Amongst these are the beliefs of a theorist called Michael Shore, who criticized music videos and promos for having no real relation to real life situations and they do not relate to the narrative of the songs lyrics. It was worded as follows "Recycled styles that contains an information overload and therefore contains views of adolescent male fantasies. Most videos contain elements of speed, power, girls and wealth. All this conveys into soft-core pornography with clichéd imagery".

An example of this is the music video/promo for Lady Gaga's Poker Face. The reason being is because even though the lyrics relate to actually playing poker and vague references to drug and alcohol addiction, the video bears little resemblance to these themes and is more related to sex and love. This emphasizes upon Michael Shaw's theory of that music videos bear no resemblance to what the song actually means due to poker face being mainly in a drastically different environment

An example is below:

In addition, the music video also explores themes of selflessness due to the scene at the poker table where there are valuable red poker chips piled up high represents wealth and power. This at the same time also goes against Michael Shore's theory by showing some amplification with the poker table with the lyrics of the song.

Prop List For our Music Video

Below is a prop list of all the equipment that we shall be utilising on our filming day for the music video.

1. Electronic Guitar due to the songs tune being heavily guitar based so in essence this is the central prop. This contributes to the fact that we are filming an alternative music video due to electronic guitars are frequently featured in alternative music videos.

2. Drum Set that we did not utilise in the end as we saw it as being to bulky and cumbersome for a music video and combined with the fact that drums arnt typically associated with alternative music lead to us scrapping our original intentions of using a drum set.

3. Clothing is a very important factor in our music video due to the fact that we want to convey to alternative genre to people in an in your face fashion with our appearance. These costume will consist of sneakers or big boots for footwear and jeans with a new style hoodie with a colourful shirt to fully emphasize the alternative genre which is vital for the music video.

4. Box-like object is very important for the stage area because the lead singer will stand on it to emphasize the alternative genres use of improvisation to make a makeshift performance stage. In the end, one of our locations at Toft Bridge was more than adequate to film without assistance from the box-like object and would have ruined the shot so we also scrapped this idea in favour of a new one.

5. Replica Christmas Tree that we shall be using in one of our key shots in the intro of the song.

6. Balloon filled with confetti to simulate a mini explosion in our music video

7. Snorkel to film bath scene.

8. Bullet for scene where it lies on top of a third world child to represent poverty/war and alternatives bands critsisms of the two, i.e Green Day or Rise Against.

9. Fake Fish

10. Fake Moustache for close-up shot.

11. Juice Carton for scene where it corresponds with the lyrics "Drink some truth juice" and we will modify it to say truth juice.

12. Lipstick
