Intertextuality Homework

Intertextuality is when something takes an element or aspect of something else that can be completely different and makes a near copy of it, although enough to be different in order to reference the area of media which it is borrowed from, a few examples are below.

Video= Ash “Clones” – References to Star Wars Republic Commando video game as well as Star Wars lore and fiction.

Shot 1= This shot shows clones in action to the lyrics “With a heart of stone and a synthetic soul” this refers to the fact that even though they are killing as they are told in a videogame, it foreshadows that real people are being killed in the real world in places like Iraq and Afghanistan.

Shot 2= This shot shows a band member kicking some glass and shattering it, this refers to both soldiers doing damage and military manevours in war and is intertextual with rock music videos due to their references to drink and drugs and the damage they can to do to peoples lives.

Shot 3= This shot shows some alien blood that yet again shows action but could also imply the ugliness and sickness within rock life, i.e drug addiction and similar illnesses.

Shot 4= This shot shows the band walking through an old building in a military style march obviously referring to the war game that the song is dedicated to.

Shot 5= This shot shows the lead singer see himself at the end, a joke referring to the title of the song which is clones. It could also imply other things such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and split personalities commonly found with traumatised soldiers.
